The Passing of the Turkish Empire in Europe B Granville Bernard Granville Baker 9781372637414 Books

Baker was a Hussar, military artist, author and traveler. In this interesting book he gives an overview of the Balkan War up to the point that the Bulgarians were at the gates of Istanbul and Edirne was under siege. Because it was written before the outcome of the war was known (as well as the consequences of the short peace that followed) it is especially appealing to me.

Aside from extensive reading on the nations of the area, my wife and I have traveled thorugh most of the areas covered in this book -- particularly in Macedonia, Burlgaria, Greece and Turkey. Baker's descriptions of the region at the end of the Nineteenth Century provide insight into what we have experienced at the end of the Twentieth.

Baker's history is sometimes shaky, and his biases are occasionally extreme. Nevertheless, he was an informed traveler in his time. As a result, the book also tells us a lot about his era, together with the biases and opinions that led to many of the sad consequences of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. He is also an excellent story teller and a pleasure to read.

The book appears to be a collection of letters or articles that was rushed to print to take advantage of public interest in the war. It appears not to have been edited and as a consequence has many repetitious passages. This is distracting, but not fatal (although it did lower my review from five to four stars).

I recommend this to anyone interested in the history of the region, with the proviso that a more balanced, recent history precede it.
